Aino, a young and ambitious freelance journalist, goes to Nigeria to report on the environmental and human rights crimes of the oil company Shell. At the same time, the company is being sued in London and The Hague, and the question of the role of the company's former chairman of the board also arises.

Henri, an experienced photographer, goes to Africa with Aino. However, in Nigeria, not everything goes according to plan and the pair end up in a police prison on charges of terrorism. How can one endure an arbitrary accusation? How can one save one's humanity in inhumane conditions?

The Cell is a dense and intense psychological thriller about personal courage, freedom of speech, and the ethics of friendship and collegiality in the startling landscapes of oil, globalization, and colonialism.
