Born in Porto, Portugal, in June 1967, he divides his time between Porto and Venade (Minho, North of Portugal).
He has written 8 plays. His play Caravana received the Carlos Avillez / SPA / Teatro Aberto Theatre Prize.
He has also written 13 books of poetry, the first seven were collected in Poesia Reunida (Quetzal, 2011). This was followed by Você Está Aqui (Quetzal, 2013; 2nd edition, Quetzal, 2026); Mediterrâneo (Quetzal, 2016), winner of the António Ramos Rosa National Poetry Prize, the Willow Run Poetry Book Award in Philadelphia, USA, and also the Tanssiva Tahru Poetry Prize, in Finland; Nómada (Quetzal, 2018), winner of the Bertrand Poetry Book of the Year Award and the Armando da Silva Carvalho Literary Prize. In 2019, he published the anthology O Tempo Avança por Sílabas. This was followed by Movimento (Quetzal, 2020), winner of the DST Grand Prize for Literature; Aberto Todos os Dias (Quetzal, 2023), winner of the Glória de Sant’Anna Literary Prize, the Portuguese Writers’ Association/António Ramos Rosa Grand Prize for Poetry, the Oeiras Poetry Prize for Lifetime Achievement and the Francisco de Sá de Miranda Literary Prize; Poesia Reunida (Quetzal, 2023); and Claridade (Quetzal, 2024). The translated editions of Mediterrâneo, Nómada and Movimento were finalists for the Premio Internazionale Camaiore in 2019, 2020 and 2023, respectively.
His poetry books have been translated and published in 16 countries. He received the prestigious Pessoa Prize in 2022.
