Sigurdsson, Birnir Jón

Birnir is an Icelandic artist working with text, film and theatre as an author and performer. His style is visual and playful, his themes often revolving around environment, the attention economy, love and connection. Birnir does individual works as a playwright and director as well as being member of devised theatre groups CGFC  and Ást og Karóki. He was the official playwright for Borgarleikhúsið city theatre the year 2022-2023 where he wrote his play Sýslumaður Dauðans (e. The Death Department). He has hosted and co-hosted various events, including experimental theatre nights in tóma rýmið, experimental theatre festival Safe fest and Gullmolinn short film festival. He is the founder of tóma rýmið experimental theatre space in Reykjavík and is a regular blogger. In 2025, he received the RÚV motivational prize, the first time it was awarded and his play The Death Department won as the play of the year at the icelandic theatre awards, Gríman.
