Theatre is enormously popular in Finland. Each year, 3.6 million theatre-goers (out of a population of 5.3 million) see productions in a theatre network spanning the entire country (approximately 150 professional theatres). In addition, there are over 500 amateur theatres in Finland, many of whom mount ambitious interpretations of demanding repertoire.
In recent years, Finnish theatres have experienced an unprecedented surge of new domestic drama. In the process, Finnish drama is becoming increasingly varied. Many up and coming Finnish dramatists have chosen Nordic Drama Corner to represent them. In addition, we have long represented such classic Finnish writers as Maria Jotuni and Veijo Meri, who are still awaiting their breakthroughs onto European stages. On these pages, we introduce those writers whose plays are already available in English, French or German translations. Our goal in the near future is to commission more translations, in the hope that more of the works of our playwrights will find their way onto the world stage. |
